A project for StavePuzzleNuts users - a Wikipedia entry for Stave Puzzles

Over the past month or so I have been trying my hand at editing Wikipedia articles. If you are not familiar with Wikipedia, its the very popular on-line encyclopedia that anyone can edit. One of the things that I noticed was that there is no entry for Stave Puzzles. I found through one unsuccessful attempt to start an article that there are some specific rules that apply for companies to appear in Wikipedia. They don't want articles about a company to appear like advertising. So a company must be 'Notable' which for Wikipedia means:

An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

So we need to find any books, newspapers articles, magazine articles etc... where Stave Puzzles have been covered. And then use these references to support all of the facts about Stave Puzzles that we will write up in this article.

Another thing I learned is that when creating a new article that you can create it in a 'Sandbox' so you can work on it slowly before the other editors on wikipedia can judge whether or not the article is 'notable'.

So I have created a sandbox location and have started a _very_ basic outline. Click HERE to go to that Wikipedia sandbox article on Stave Puzzles.

The other thing about Wikipedia article is that you are not supposed to write an article about yourself and a company is not supposed to write an article about themselves. But there is nothing against Stave providing us information about themselves, and information about books, articles and other press coverage that they have received and we can then put that information into the Wikipedia article.

And when I say that anyone can edit wikipedia I mean _anyone_ you do not even have to create an account. If you want to help with this project just click HERE to go to my sandbox article and then click on Edit this page or any one the edit links on the right hand side which let you edit a single section and start creating.

You can also leave a comment about the page or discuss things by clicking on the discussion link just to the left of Edit this page. And please feel free to email me here or post questions on this forum about this project or about editing wikipedia and I will try and answer. There is some strange syntax for referencing books, articles etc.. but we can work through those details later. As I said I have only been playing around with Wikipedia about a month or so but I think I have a basic understanding of how things work.

Stave Puzzles are so unique that they deserve to be included in Wikipedia and who better than this group of StavePuzzleNuts (with a little help from Stave) to create an encyclopedic article on Stave Puzzles.

Let me know what you think!

p.s. Click Here for the full wikipedia article on guidelines to including articles about a company in wikipedia.

And for your reference here is the url for the sandbox article:

Hi Ed, I just happened to notice your entry... I love the idea of a Wikipedia entry.. go for it. Current April/May issue of Departures magazine (Amex platinum) has an article on Stave... www.departures.com/articles/worldly-goods-puzzling-investments
Check it out, Steve

Steve,

Unfortunately you have to be a Amex Platinum card holder to read that article. Any other references in books, articles newspapers etc... you could provide us.

Thanks

Hi Ed, the above link will take you right to the article. I was just there and copied the link. Did you have a problem? If so, I will copy/paste/send you it. Steve

Yes, that link takes you to a member login screen. The other problem is that I don't think a publication not accessible to the 'general public' will cut it with the other wikipedia editors. Sources have to be 'verifiable'. They can be picky especially with references.

Hi Ed. I started editing the wiki by inserting summaries on Trick and Teaser puzzles. I need to finish that. Evidently we can't load images is that right? I tried putting in the swords and bolts but couldn't. Am I doing something wrong? tx

Jane, Good start. Yes we can add images just not like we do here at StavePuzzleNuts. Wikipedia is very conscious of copyrights. So they don't allow copying anything from other web sites. So we can not insert anything directly from Stave.com. What we can do to provide examples of things is to take our own pictures and upload them. When you upload them you pick a copyright that allow them to be used on wikipedia. If fact this morning I took a picture of an 'example Stave puzzle box', uploaded it and inserted it into the article. There is an upload link on the left hand side of every wikipedia page. I also have been googling and have found a few references for facts from the article. Take a look.

Hi....Ed....I know you know my name is JUne....I'll take Jane, though anytime, over "May, April" ...anyhoo......I've made more edits today. One thing: Stave Trick puzzles can have more than one solution. Champ actually has two solutions and there are other Trick puzzles that have more than two solutions. Articles written awhile ago like the Cigar Afficionado one may have outdated information. I bring that magazine piece up because I think you cite it in the Trick entry of the Wiki. This project is a great one......truly great idea, Ed. Only sorry I didn't think of it myself first! Way to go. June

Hi. I have a lot of digital images I took of Stave pieces, the clown etc. I'll put them in and we'll see if they work......feel free to move them around within the wiki etc....

June, More pictures would be good, I would think that if we could show an example of each of the various types of Stave's unique puzzle pieces that would look good. We do need a good picture of the Stave Puzzles Logo for the Infobox thats in the top left of the article.

Also about Champ, the Stave Website says 'but only one correct solution to Champ'. The section on trick puzzles could expand to describe others.

That's the great think about wikipedia is that anyone can change and re-arrange things. If you notice I took out your comment about bringing out the hammer. Since I don't thing it's really 'encyclopedic'. It's a little different writing in 'encyclopedic mode', it took me a while to get the hang of it. When I first started playing with Wikipedia I thought of an article about Stave Puzzles and just went ahead and wrote a brief article, it was deleted later that same day since I didn't have any references and did not meet the requirements for an article about a company so I put it on hold for a while learning about the rules of wikipedia.

Hopefully we can get some more members of StavePuzzleNuts to contribute and make this article really complete.

ok so the Stave website needs updating because the wood block that comes with the puzzle says there are two solutions and you have to do them both to get the puzzle points....at least that's what i had to do!!!

Hi. ok got it about the hammer. this is why I qualified the rating system as coming from the stave guide book because that's how the rates are defined....the ratings sound conversational, but that's how they are. The publication date for the Stave Puzzles Guidebook is 2005 if you want to site it in the reference area. I've got to run right now......and will do it later if you don't want to insert it. best, j

Hi Ed and June, Paula here from Stave Puzzles. I do marketing and PR for Stave. How can I help you in your Wiki quest? Ed - I can send you jpegs of photos in catalogs that we have already taken or I can scan magazine and newspaper articles that have run on Stave. I don't think you can post the article - that's a copyright issue, but you can probably quote excerpts or pieces of the story.
