A project for StavePuzzleNuts users - a Wikipedia entry for Stave Puzzles

Over the past month or so I have been trying my hand at editing Wikipedia articles. If you are not familiar with Wikipedia, its the very popular on-line encyclopedia that anyone can edit. One of the things that I noticed was that there is no entry for Stave Puzzles. I found through one unsuccessful attempt to start an article that there are some specific rules that apply for companies to appear in Wikipedia. They don't want articles about a company to appear like advertising. So a company must be 'Notable' which for Wikipedia means:

An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

So we need to find any books, newspapers articles, magazine articles etc... where Stave Puzzles have been covered. And then use these references to support all of the facts about Stave Puzzles that we will write up in this article.

Another thing I learned is that when creating a new article that you can create it in a 'Sandbox' so you can work on it slowly before the other editors on wikipedia can judge whether or not the article is 'notable'.

So I have created a sandbox location and have started a _very_ basic outline. Click HERE to go to that Wikipedia sandbox article on Stave Puzzles.

The other thing about Wikipedia article is that you are not supposed to write an article about yourself and a company is not supposed to write an article about themselves. But there is nothing against Stave providing us information about themselves, and information about books, articles and other press coverage that they have received and we can then put that information into the Wikipedia article.

And when I say that anyone can edit wikipedia I mean _anyone_ you do not even have to create an account. If you want to help with this project just click HERE to go to my sandbox article and then click on Edit this page or any one the edit links on the right hand side which let you edit a single section and start creating.

You can also leave a comment about the page or discuss things by clicking on the discussion link just to the left of Edit this page. And please feel free to email me here or post questions on this forum about this project or about editing wikipedia and I will try and answer. There is some strange syntax for referencing books, articles etc.. but we can work through those details later. As I said I have only been playing around with Wikipedia about a month or so but I think I have a basic understanding of how things work.

Stave Puzzles are so unique that they deserve to be included in Wikipedia and who better than this group of StavePuzzleNuts (with a little help from Stave) to create an encyclopedic article on Stave Puzzles.

Let me know what you think!

p.s. Click Here for the full wikipedia article on guidelines to including articles about a company in wikipedia.

Paula,

Getting a scan of any magazine/newspaper articles would be very helpful. The wikipedia rules for companies require references in secondary sources so the more the better. I will send you a private message (if you will add me as a friend) with my email address. We can then share these with the people who want to help with the article. I did some more work on the article this weekend and added some references to what I could find on the internet.

Pictures that you have in your catalogs are copyrighted by Stave so you would have to release your copyright for those pictures which is probably something that you don't want to do. The easiest thing for pictures would be for StavePuzzleNuts to take their own pictures and then upload to Wikipedia as I did with the picture I put in the wikipedia page showing an example puzzle in a box.

You are also more than welcome to review what we have done so far, feed us additional info, make comments, suggestions but as I mentioned according to wikipedia 'rules' you (i.e. Stave Puzzles) are not supposed to directly edit the article.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Ed. I did understand that in the rules - so I won't contribute directly. But I fyou have any questions or need clarification please don't hesitate to ask me.

I have also promised to get these articles to June so she can display them for all the PuzzleNuts.
You are welcome to use any photos from my Flickr pages click here to help illustrate the article. Many show completed puzzle images though... however if you wanted to illustrate a rebus or show some silhouettes and what not those may be useful...

Ok, so I added a bunch on Limited Editions that I know about and their current statuses. Stave gang up for providing 1st release dates + current status for all of them at all, what I entered is at the sandbox + in this picture.

Erik, great job adding all that detail about Limited editions and adding something to the custom puzzle section. Unfortunately due to copyright issues we can not use any of your Flickr pictures. I am working with Paula on what pictures if any we can add to the article. Wikipedia is very strict about copyright issues.

Here is the link again in case anyone else wants to make a contribution or has any comments.

Let's be clear when you say cannot use my pictures. The issue is not rights from me, since I am the copyright holder in those images, so it could only be the underlying copyright in the art works. Which is always a thorny sort of double-copyright problem to even analyze.

Some, for example the one of my cat, is full custom and I am the underlying copyright holder. So that could be fully used.

On others depending on how much of the work is shown and the purpose of showing it, would clearly fall into fair use w/r to the underlying images.

Erik,

Yes, its the underlying copyright of the artwork in the puzzle. If you take a look at this web page it describes the issues with what's called "Derivative works":

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Derivative_works

For your custom cat puzzle you could upload it to the article if you are the sole copyright holder, it would need to be assigned one of the 2 Creative Commons licenses that wikipedia accepts for someone else to upload it. Here is the wikipedia web page that describes which types of images from Flickr can be uploaded:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload/Flickr

I think we should work closely with Paula to ensure that Stave is happy with any images that we upload to Wikipedia.

Thanks again for your help with the article. BTW, I put a welcome message on your wikipedia talk page.

I added a few more citations using the Smithsonian article tonight.

Thx Ed; btw I'm an IP attorney so I do understand the issues, Wikipedia is being on the more conservative side about some of the things.

Anyhow, my cat one illustrates a number of stave items and I can upload my originals from my computer to the project shortly so we can use different areas, e.g. to show off a stave rebus, etc. Fake corners, etc. Have to wait until my wikipedia account is 4 days old to upload images.

I'm certainly open to Stave providing other samples as well.

That said, if we take pictures to show "crazy claws" that would clearly be fair use. And I think it would be cool to turn the list at the bottom where you have their techniques listed out into a table with thumbnail samples.

Erik,

I feel dumb explaining copyright to an IP attorney ;-), what are the odds?

When I first started thinking about this I project I did envision having example pictures of all of the different kinds of puzzle features. Then I started reading all of the restrictions regarding copyright and decided to focus on the words first. As I only own 5 puzzles, I didn't have a lot of material to work with and as you said they are very restrictive in their opinion of copyrights. If you are willing to upload images from your custom designed puzzle that would be great.

One other thing that we have to be very careful of is not to write the article so that it sounds like advertising. See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NOTADVERTISING#ADVERTISING

Since I had my first very brief article about Stave Puzzles deleted within several hours I want to make sure that this one does not break any rules. I have been been participating in what wikipedia calls Articles for Deletion where users vote on articles that have been nominated for deletion because they do not meet the standards.

I look forward to working with you to complete this article.

PS: glad you liked the ltd edition detail, I separately emailed Paula for more info. And Ted made some comments in an email to me that I will follow up also w/r to the ltd editions.
