A project for StavePuzzleNuts users - a Wikipedia entry for Stave Puzzles

Over the past month or so I have been trying my hand at editing Wikipedia articles. If you are not familiar with Wikipedia, its the very popular on-line encyclopedia that anyone can edit. One of the things that I noticed was that there is no entry for Stave Puzzles. I found through one unsuccessful attempt to start an article that there are some specific rules that apply for companies to appear in Wikipedia. They don't want articles about a company to appear like advertising. So a company must be 'Notable' which for Wikipedia means:

An organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources.

So we need to find any books, newspapers articles, magazine articles etc... where Stave Puzzles have been covered. And then use these references to support all of the facts about Stave Puzzles that we will write up in this article.

Another thing I learned is that when creating a new article that you can create it in a 'Sandbox' so you can work on it slowly before the other editors on wikipedia can judge whether or not the article is 'notable'.

So I have created a sandbox location and have started a _very_ basic outline. Click HERE to go to that Wikipedia sandbox article on Stave Puzzles.

The other thing about Wikipedia article is that you are not supposed to write an article about yourself and a company is not supposed to write an article about themselves. But there is nothing against Stave providing us information about themselves, and information about books, articles and other press coverage that they have received and we can then put that information into the Wikipedia article.

And when I say that anyone can edit wikipedia I mean _anyone_ you do not even have to create an account. If you want to help with this project just click HERE to go to my sandbox article and then click on Edit this page or any one the edit links on the right hand side which let you edit a single section and start creating.

You can also leave a comment about the page or discuss things by clicking on the discussion link just to the left of Edit this page. And please feel free to email me here or post questions on this forum about this project or about editing wikipedia and I will try and answer. There is some strange syntax for referencing books, articles etc.. but we can work through those details later. As I said I have only been playing around with Wikipedia about a month or so but I think I have a basic understanding of how things work.

Stave Puzzles are so unique that they deserve to be included in Wikipedia and who better than this group of StavePuzzleNuts (with a little help from Stave) to create an encyclopedic article on Stave Puzzles.

Let me know what you think!

p.s. Click Here for the full wikipedia article on guidelines to including articles about a company in wikipedia.

Erik,

One of the Five Pillars of Wikipedia says Be Bold. If you think it will look good then go for it! Just because I started this article does not mean I own it.

(1) No worries, and do NOT feel dumb.

(2) Will upload pictures of my puzzle. It was funny I was giving a talk at a law school yesterday and the professor and I started talking about copyright issues & wikipedia and we both agreed that they are being overly restrictive... That said, we can clearly use pictures of puzzles zoomed in to show certain features even under their restrictive rules.

(3) Agreed, regarding advertising/deletion. Though I think the article is starting to shape up nicely.

Erik,

Great job adding those photo's from your custom puzzle. As you said the article is really starting to look good. The other photo's that wikipedia seems to 'allow' are photos from "an advertisement, press kit, or other promotional source", I asked Paula if they have anything suitable.

Thank Ed; I've got to add some more photos to add and hopefully we can fill out the limited edition table with Paula's help. At that point it is probably worth taking a shot at a posting for real again.

Paula helped me fill out a lot more of the limited edition puzzle listing so that is up on the sandbox now.

Go Paula!

Hi Ed, Eric and Paula: You guys are doing a tremendous job with the Wiki entry. I've been swamped with work and not able to contribute of late. Now I see that you don't need me!!!!! The status chart of limited editions is AWESOME. June

I'm sure there are still plenty of contributions for you to make. :)

Erik,

More great photos. When we transfer this article to the main wikipedia section I also want to nominate a tidbit of info to the 'Did you know' section on the main wikipedia page. After reading the instructions I was thinking of using this:

"that Stave Puzzles makes a 44 piece jigsaw puzzle (named Champ) that goes together 32 different ways but only one of them is correct."

I also added the external links section and added an example teaser puzzle picture. You samples section looks great!

Let me know when if you are done with the photos as I think we are just about ready to move this article to the main wikipedia area.

Thanks

I think I'm 95%+ done with photos, I think we are certainly at a point where it is reasonable to move over. I did some more cleanups just now.

But I say go for it!

Are you going to do the "Traditional" section? Did you want me to do it?

I would like to see a puzzle design similar to your cityscapes, but more customized. Instead of the artwork by Stave artists actual photos of contributing puzzlenuts could be arranged in a collage geographically, ie: Paris, London, Africa, Las vegas, Carribean Islands, etc These would make wonderful & interesting gifts as keepsakes of people around the world representing moments in their lives they wold like to share with loved ones, both memories & dreams. Your theme of the vote for a museum or zoo made me start thinking and the thought took me "outside the (puzzle) box".
That is Stave's biggest contribution to society & members: promoting thought of others as well as out of the box. Thank you & all the puzzlenuts for allowing me to share this idea with you and I look forward to your input & reaponse.
